Assisted living neighborhood one big, happy family

Since 1995, National Assisted Living Week has taken place for one week in September. It always kicks off with Grandparent’s Day, the first Sunday of the month. This year we recognize National Assisted Living Week September 9-15 and are thankful for two staff members dedicated to making the unit an enriching place to live.

Meet Lisa Montoya, AL activity director/social service designee. Lisa has been working at Manor of the Plains since October 2004 and is responsible for the development of programs and entertainment for the community.

“For some, it may be an evening out at a special restaurant and for others, it may be a sing-a-long or bingo. The activities staff works hard to make sure there is a variety of programs and activities to choose from,” said Lisa.

Just a few weeks ago, Amanda Delgado joined the staff as assisted living/home health director. In her new role, she helps prepare staff to perform their jobs accurately and works with residents and family members to ensure they’re receiving all the proper care.

“I enjoy working with the residents and making sure they have everything that they need to live a happy life here in assisted living,” said Amanda.

Some of Lisa’s happiest moments around the assisted living neighborhood have been on Halloween and around Christmas. For Halloween, the community room is transformed into a spook house and employees and residents bring their kids and grandkids trick or treating. At Christmas, the community turns into a winter wonderland with 14 decorated Christmas trees, several Nativity scenes, a five-foot Santa Claus that plays music and dances and a 12-foot tall Christmas Tree.

For Amanda, her favorite activity so far was the gospel concert Manor of the Plains hosted for the Dodge City community.

“The smiles on the residents faces, joy and excitement at the concert warmed my heart. I love that our community has many activities and outings that they can enjoy.”

Life in the assisted living unit has proven to be life-changing for residents and staff alike.

“The residents have so much to share, I learn something new every day about them and myself. They have helped me to understand that we all have challenges in life, but that does not stop us from learning how to overcome those challenges,” said Lisa.

And while she’s only been here a few weeks, Amanda has quickly seen how Manor of the Plains is all about compassion and family.

“We are a big family here, not just a business,” said Amanda. “The staff here genuinely care for the residents and we all strive to make each and every resident happy.”
