ART IS AGELESS SPOTLIGHT: CHARLENE ACKERMAN

Each year, Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America’s Art is Ageless juried art competition allows seniors throughout the area to show off handiwork while proving the “agelessness of creativity.” This year marks the third time that 84-year-old, Dodge City resident, Charlene Ackerman will be submitting a quilt into the competition. Her entry this year is entitled “The ABCs of Life.”

“It’s a child’s quilt,” said Charlene. “It depicts sharing, loving, blessings … and it all goes along with the alphabet so ‘sharing’ goes with ‘s’ and so on.”

Charlene began quilting just eight years ago thanks to the encouragement of some friends and doesn’t expect to quit any time soon.

“My hands are still good and my eyes are good—I think I should do that while I can,” said Charlene.

Charlene does all of the piecing and embroidery involved in her pieces herself and is especially excited anytime she can put her own personal touch into her quilts.

“Anymore, I’m leaning towards anything that has handwork on it, like applique,” said Charlene.

As for the Art is Ageless competition, it’s the competition aspect that she enjoys the most.

“It’s challenging … there’s a lot of good artists that show up,” said Charlene. “I just enjoy it.”
