CNA finds joy in one-on-one work

Certified nurse's assistants are some of the hardest-working people you'll find in long-term care, because they do so much work one-on-one with residents. Robin Pike says that is her favorite part of the job.

Robin has worked at Manor of the Plains for 17 years as a CNA and certified medication assistant. She's one of our longest-serving employees, and this month she will be honored along with thousands of other CNAs nationwide during National Nursing Assistants Week, which kicks off June 15 with National Career Nursing Assistants Day.

When Robin first came to Manor of the Plains, she was working part time in health care on weekends. But it wasn't long before the staff urged her to take a full-time position.

"I finally said yes," she said. "I just like working with my residents. They become like family, I work with them so much. You get attached."

It's true for the residents as well as their families. Robin, who now works in assisted living, said she feels that family members are comfortable addressing any concerns with her, and she's glad to be a resource for them.

A lot can change in 17 years, and Robin said she's been grateful to receive training throughout her career – especially in dementia care, where a number of new therapies have been developed in recent years. She has also received her certification for home health care.

Robin grew up nearby in Minneola and likes to spend time with her family when she's not at work. She especially enjoys watching her 14-year-old son play basketball. "He's my only one, and he's growing up!" she said.

In May we celebrated National Nurses Week, and this month will be the 40th annual observance of National Nursing Assistants Week. The theme is “Nursing Assistants – I Choose Respect.” We are grateful to Robin and everyone on our nursing team who lives out this theme every single day with our residents. Be sure to show them your appreciation, too!
